She may have never set a paw in Williamson County, but the legacy of this Civil War canine hero qualifies Sallie as an honorary Franklin Dog.

It was a brindle Staffordshire Bull Terrier that served as the regimental mascot for the 11th Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry. As a four-week-old puppy, she was given to a first lieutenant when the new regiment was training at the fairgrounds in West Chester, PA. Sallie grew up among the men of the regiment, following them on marches and into battle.

According to some sources, Sallie knew the drum roll announcing reveille and was first out of quarters to attend roll call. At dress parade, the dog took a position beside the regimental colors and during encampments, she slept by the captain’s tent after patrolling the area on an inspection of her own.

During her first battle, Sallie remained with the colors. This is said to have been her practice at Antietam, Fredericksburg, and Chancellorsville. At the Battle of Gettysburg, Sallie dog got separated from the unit. When the medical details moved onto the battleground, they found Sallie comforting her wounded friends and guarding the bodies of her dead compatriots.

During a spring 1863 review of the Union army, Sallie marched alongside the 11th Pennsylvania and was reportedly acknowledged with a raise of a stovepipe hat by President Abraham Lincoln.

Sallie continued her faithful service through February, 1865, when she was struck by a bullet in the battle of Hatcher’s Run, Virginia and was buried on the battlefield. For her devotion to the men, Sallie is memorialized at the 11th Pennsylvania monument at Gettysburg. blackjack casino

Right now most of us are re-evaluating what we had come to view as necessities. Some are struggling to provide the true essentials. Most everyone is tightening up the recreation budget, especially in the middle of the holiday season.

It’s good to take stock of the simple pleasures in our lives. Some have paws and wagging tails.

When I read a book, catch a movie or see a news item about people struggling to make
ends meet, there’s often a family dog lurking around in the story. And I guess it would be
understandable if some financial advisor didn’t approve.

But when you look at the P&L, it seems like a pretty good deal. There’s not a much better Return on Investment than a perpetual happy greeting and an occasional lick on the nose.

Is this the year when you’ll welcome the pitter-patter of four paws into your home? Will your next Christmas card include the addition of a dog to your Franklin family portrait? There are some important considerations as you decide “if” and “which.”

I love dogs. So does it surprise you to hear me say that I DON’T believe every family should have one? I enjoy seeing situations where a dog adds to the unity of a family; and I regret seeing situations where a dog divides.

That’s why I say that a properly mastered dog can provide a wholesome and rejuvenating relationship for a family or individual.

Don’t expect a dog to come into your home and merely be an added spectator to “life as you now know it.” A dog brings both joy and responsibility. Expect both.

If you truthfully don’t have the interest or time to train a dog, I’m fearful that adding a dog to your busy life will not be a positive thing. If this is the situation, yet you’re convinced that dog ownership is right for you, I would definitely steer you towards finding a well-behaved adult dog…and there are many in need of a good home. Even then, expect a “settling in” period.

Also consider this: an immaculate home and lifestyle may be important to you. Do you find lint rollers disgusting? Would paw prints on your best clothes cause a major meltdown? Do you understand why it’s called FURniture?

It’s not that busy people shouldn’t have dogs. For me, a dog’s role as a stress reliever is very real. But YOU might not view it the same way. Do yourself — and the dog — a favor and realize that a dog means a change in your life.

For me, it’s been a good change. spela casino online
